Re “Occupy Culver City Plays Innocent Havoc with School Board

Did Karlo Silbiger really speak on behalf of the School Board to our City Council on Monday night, asking for the chance to use Council Chambers for an upcoming School Board meeting?

I read your story where it appeared that Mr. Silbiger asked the City Council to allow the School Board to use the Balkman Council Chambers for upcoming School Board meetings, including this Tuesday’s swearing-in meeting where the new President and Vice President of the board will be named.

At present, the meeting is scheduled for the Lin Howe School auditorium. However, that facility does not allow for live television. Mr. Silbiger is likely to be named President of the School Board on Tuesday, and in the typical Silbiger way, he wants his election to be telecast live.

I have watched the previous School Board meeting webcasts, and I’ve watched the City Council webcasts.

I’ve not seen any meeting where Silbiger was authorized to speak on behalf of the School Board to ask for additional School Board meeting time in the Council Chambers.

Yet, here is what Silbiger said last Monday in regard to just that:

“Good evening, Mr. Mayor, members of the City Council. Thank you for having me. I am Karlo Silbiger, Vice President of the Culver City School Board, coming to you with good news and bad news.

“We haven’t been able to get that second [monthly] meeting [in the Council Chambers], and that has made it difficult at times, like next Tuesday where having it here would be so amazing.

“I am asking the Council once again to take some leadership to help support the School District and the Board and members of the public who want to participate in our meetings and see if you can try to help me get this done.”

“Help me get this done”?

Does this man not understand that he cannot represent the Board, that he is only one member of a five-member Board?

He can make a request as a citizen, but unless authorized by the Board, he cannot represent the Board in a request.

Yet, time and time again, this is exactly what he does.

What happens when he becomes President of the Board?

Can we expect more flagrant violations of the rules?

I am beginning to miss Steve Gourley and Scott Zeidman already, and the new Board hasn’t even been sworn in.

I can’t imagine what life will be like in the non-rule abiding Silbiger reign.
