Wondering Why Natatorium Is Such a Painful Subject

The Culver City Natatorium has been closed for the last 20 years due to budget problems

I would like to see this facility reopened.

I believe we should begin again. I believe we should start the discussion with the community. Let’s work together for our children and get this pool open!

I am reposting a commentary to show how misinformed some people actually are.

One person appears to be well informed. However, his claims have few facts.

Clearly the Natatorium is a very painful issue in Culver City. This person is trying his best to stay on point with the capital improvements topic but can't help but bring up the Natatorium.

The Natatorium is not an item on the capital improvements agenda.

Why are people so scared of this building? Every time people start talking about spending money in Culver City, this building comes up in the conversation, this building nobody cares about, this building everyone claims not to have heard of or know where it is.

“Why are we wasting time with the Natatorium?”

I'll tell you why, in my opinion, the Natatorium is so painful to talk about.

It is the most neglected part of this city's history. It is the most under-utilized property in the city. Yes, you can walk around East Culver City, Downtown or the West Side, pointing at properties that have been neglected.

But nothing compares to the Natatorium.

Nothing compares to the fact that this building with two swimming pools and diving boards and locker rooms is not being used by our children.

No kids are laughing and screaming Marco Polo.

No kids are crying because they are scared to jump in the pool for the first time.

There are no sounds coming from this building, and that is what hurts so much.

It also hurts because it represents failure, failure by all of us not just Board members or previous Board members but everyone, collectively.
