I enjoy finding new ways to inspire my students. One of the best is to offer them opportunities to share their musical expression with appreciative audiences in a positive environment.

The key to the O.C. Cello Choir is to have fun. We all work to perfect the notes and other technical aspects of the songs. But as I emphasize continually, the objective is not to play perfectly. The objective is to learn how to have fun while performing.

It is amazing how well this approach works to create a memorable performance for all. My students perform while smiling, the audience sees this joy and responds with enthusiastic support and listening, and everyone enjoys a positive musical experience.

The interesting thing I always find is, in addition to everyone having fun, the music always sounds better in this environment as opposed to when people are “working really hard.” Always a student myself, I apply this principle in other areas of my life.

The O.C. Cello Choir will be treating families and music lovers to a holiday concert on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Tustin Community Library. We hope to see you there.
