Two Perspectives on a Private Email

[Note of Clarification: School Board candidate Gary Abrams contacted the newspaper to give his permission to publish an email of rebuke he had received from Dan O’Brien, a parent in the School District. He wrote: “You have my permission to publish this email. I will have a response soon.”

Mr. O’Brien held a different view, and after the email was published, sent the following amendation:

“The email that was posted was a private email from Dan O'Brien to Gary Abrams. For Gary to post this without my permission effectively negates what I was attempting to do: Convince him to stop writing inflammatory and frequently inaccurate statements that can be misconstrued as facts. By posting my private email to him it also appears that I meant to publicly humiliate him, and that was not my intention at all.

“Finally, the two School District employees mentioned in the email are unfairly brought into the fray because this email was posted without my permission. I sincerely apologize to both.

“My only goal is to get the citizens of Culver City to behave in a more humane way to one another, and I fear that this public release of this email will only harm that cause.

“Sincerely,

“Dan.”]
