The Odd Couple Makes a Comeback

With Tony Randall in the ground, lo these many years, and Jack Klugman reduced to Astonishingly Elderly status, The Odd Couple (1970-’75) returned to television last night, starring the odd Cornel West and the even odder sea otter (compare their faces) Tav (Occasionally) Smiley.

When Cor and Tav did a 15-minute spin on the O’Reilly Show on Fox, they resembled two naughty but chastened 10-year-olds who just had been spanked for telling fat fibs to gullible audiences. They were so entertaining, fumbling and stuttering to justify themselves. No match for Mr. O’Reilly, they couldn’t have been discounted faster if they had called in bored.

It was the most onesided television since the last wrestling match.

Tav and Cor believe that all blacks are victims of America’s racist mentality, and anyone white or black (especially black) who denies it is an idiot.

They are masterful at attracting attention to themselves. When the refreshing Herman Cain said — truthfully — the other day that blacks collectively have been brainwashed into voting Democrat since FDR’s administration, this was a prod in the back to brainwashed blacks across the nation.

Brainwashed Cor, suffering from inattention to his puerility, fired back with a venom that brainwashed blacks have been told to use when speaking in public.

Just because 93 percent of blacks voted for Swish and 90 percent of blacks mechanically vote for Democrats — living or dead, makes no difference to them — is no sign that we are brainwashed, Cor muttered.

Tav and Cor took lessons in peanut butter-mouth articulation from Bill Press. The unimpressive Mr. Press’s syndicated weekday early morning program on 1150 AM would embarrass a deaf mute if only he could hear him. As a herald of the Jealous Left, he cannot string one error-free sentence together.

Tav is a PBS fixture.

Cor apparently is trying to be. He is as phony as Confederate money. He earned his stained “academic” reputation by complaining that Ivy League schools were abusing him, were not promoting him to his deserved exalted status because (pass it on), my gosh, he is black.

He calls everybody brother.

Tav does, too.

Brother, can you spare a dime?

I presume by double-teaming, these two brotherly geniuses have replaced Mr. G. Washington as the Father of Our Country. In today’s sociological climate, it is stylish, you know, to have two Daddies and no Mommy.

Pimping for Poverty

To their distress, they have been called poverty pimps for their latest gig or gag — not sure which. But, hey, when the talent is thin, you still have to grind out a living.

Why work when it has become so politically fashionable to the Jealous Left to lie down in a filthy street and wail, “I am a victim. The government is not creating a job for me.”

These are the classy people Cor and Tav are circling the country not only defending but hoping to elevate to the status of political martyrs.

Tav and Cor, separately and together, are carpetshleppers, baloney-throwers, from ‘way back in their carnival days.

Cor and Tav, you may have heard, have mounted a hot nationwide gig, crying out from church steeples, where they take turns doing handstands, that Lawdy, Lawdy, all black people are victims of mean-spirited whites. Black poverty is a massive historic crime.

Mr. Cain called out their nonsense. He said that any black or white person who is not rich has only himself to blame. He said that racism is virtually not holding anyone back.

The best rhetorical rebound that Mr. West and Mr. (Un)Smiley could think of was, “All blacks are victims, and that’s it.”
