Re “Looks to Me as if Capital Projects Never Will be Completed

Re “Proof That Schools Are in Wretched Condition and Declining

Cannons blazing, Scott Zeidman, President of the School Board and candidate for re-election one month from Saturday, forcefully answered two well-known critics who blame allegedly deteriorating Culver CVity schools on him.

Debbie Hamme, President of the Assn. of Classified Employees — Culver City, and Robert Zirgulis, came down strongly on Mr. Zeidman this week in letters to the editor.

The timing is not random. Mr. Zirgulis is a rival candidate and Ms. Hamme prominently is backing challenger Nancy Goldberg.

Mr. Zeidman mainly addressed Ms. Hamme. She broke new ground in the campaign by asserting that Culver City schools are in raggedy condition, citing numerous failures.

Mr. Zeidman: “I have seen Debbie Hamme campaigning inches away from El Rincon School. It is an election year, and Debbie is going to do everything she can to get her chosen person elected.

“When she writes a letter to the editor, I generally pay little attention. For the most part, it is propaganda.”

Ms. Hamme expressed doubt the four fairly glamorous capital projects ever will be completed, and she asserted that Mr. Zeidman may be playing favorites in influencing priorities.

Mr. Zeidman: “I did read awhile ago that she said we just started this capital projects stuff because it is an election year.

“We had a vote on solar when (retired Board member) Dana Russell, Jessica Beagles-Roos and Saundra Davis were on the Board with me two years ago.

“Chevron came in almost three years ago to try and convince us to do solar at no cost. We have been pushing solar for three years, and I have been on the Board less than four.”
