The one day of the year that whatever* I want is granted.

On Sunday, the kids of friends, and the kids of those kids, and the parents of all those kids, and some friends without kids, will have a hand at making pop-up cards.

Not only that, my guests will be able to make their own salads — choosing ingredients from an array of bowls.

I had the chance to have that sweet layer cake I’ve often dreamed of. But all I’d eat of that cake is one bite. Instead, I chose the cake I will eat several bites of – alligator cake. I love it. It’s long and flat, like an alligator, and is covered with icing and pecans. YUM! I think I’ll buy two. If both cakes are eaten on Sunday, maybe I’ll buy another one before my birthday is over and keep the leftovers in the freezer for as long as it lasts.

It should be fun to spend time with friends I don’t see much during the year.

Perhaps the main reason for having a birthday party is that I am celebrating reaching the 7th decade of life. Actually that was last year, but at the time, I was very happily involved in my daughter’s and future son-in-law’s wedding plans.

This won’t be anything like the last birthday party I remember – when I celebrated my 5th decade. There was a surprise stripper. I was a little younger then and could take it. Thank G-d, though, that she stopped her dance at her under-garments.

*”Whatever” appears to be true. My lovely wife has given me free rein to decide on whatever I want for my party. Do I wish I could have a birthday party each month? No. Once a decade is just about right for a party. For all those other years, just spending time with my wife and family will suffice.

Now that I think about it, I like to celebrate my birthday – that is, my life – every day. I am thankful to G-d for being here on earth, for having the blessing of family, a number of good friends, good health, a connection to my ancestors, and a connection to future descendants. The alligator cake is truly just the icing on the cake.
