Going, Going, Guam

With all the discussion of how the post office deficit has far exceeded its income, consider this:”

No one seems to mention that if you can mail a first class letter from the territory of Guam in the western Pacific to the territory of Puerto Rico away out in the Atlantic (roughly half way around the world) for only 44 cents, that bargain-basement rate compared to postage in much smaller countries certainly has contributed to the woeful situation.

Even a 50-cent first class stamp would be a terrific bargain in today's economy.

Congress's hesitation to grant more than miniscule, token increases in postage over the years indubitably lies at the root of the fiscal problem.
