Re “‘Exceptions Should Be Made for Senior City Workers’ Malsin Says

Scott Malsin, the man who came to the City Council, to serve the community he lives in and nothing more.

The Police Dept. Command Staff, who are only with the Department to serve the citizens of Culver City. Without these people, crime would touch every citizen and Culver City would be a City of Victims.

This week, we have learned that these people are not serving because of high ideals for public service but instead for the lifetime paid healthcare insurance for them and their families.

The question is:

Do you take the $20,000-$25,000 per year health insurance benefits for you and your family or do you stay for the higher retirement pay?

The noble choice would be to think of one’s family and take the health insurance benefit for your family and leave now.

In these hard financial times, what choices have the civic-minded leaders of Culver City proposed?

Scott Malsin has decided he wants both; he wants to stay, get a higher retirement and collect the health insurance benefits.

I am sorry I missed Point C, which is “All of the Above.”

The noble Mr. Malsin is only thinking of those few senior city workers in the Police Dept. as exceptions to this rule change.

Mr. Malsin has been around long enough to know that Pers (Public Employee Retirement System) will only allow one health benefit plan for all Culver City employees.

That would mean Mr. Malsin would fall into the category of Senior City Worker.

What a surprise.

Before you think the two city unions that already have signed agreements, the Culver City Management Group and the Culver City Employees Assn. are the heroes in all of this, you have to remember this is the oldest trick in the book.

I cannot count the number of times that the Fire Dept. Assn. settled contracts giving up Pers Retirement Benefits in exchange for other benefits, knowing full well that the Council and the other employee associations would never approve it.

In the end the Pers contract would stay the same and the Fire Dept. would keep their Pers benefits and their new ones.
