Dateline Dayton — Sometime ago, Last Friday, Pauline and I were to start a getaway weekend. It didn’t happen because her brother ended up in the hospital, and she needed to stay close, in case he would be released, which also didn’t happen.
Since I already had arranged with a gentleman in Georgia, to pick up a cash register base he was donating to Dayton history, in the name of the Cash Register Collectors Club, I had to make the trip.
It would have been great trip for us because we were connecting in the Nashville area and neither of us had been there.
Early Friday morning I left, and by 11:30 I reached my destination.
That was strange. 11:30? Then realized Nashville is in a different time zone. I had pre-arranged our meeting for 2 o’clock. But if I had known of the time difference, we could have met an hour earlier.
I took advantage of the extra time by visiting the four wonderful antiques shops on Main Street.
I don’t know why, but it’s much harder for me find something that really gets me to the point of wanting to spend money. I was able to find three mugs, which I felt should be added to my collection. That was the extent of my purchases.
My revised plan was to spend the night in Nashville, giving me an opportunity to check things out for a possible future visit. Since Pauline wasn’t with me, I just didn’t have the interest. Besides, why spend the money? By 2:15, I was on my way home. There will be another time.
I stopped at a couple of antique malls (no purchases), and also made the necessary pit stops. By 10 Friday night, I was home.
It turned out that Pauline’s brother wasn’t released until yesterday. However, if she had gone with me, se would have been uneasy the whole time.
Happy Anniversary
Today marks the start of the third year I have been providing essays to thefrontpageonline.com. I must admit it hasn’t always been easy to find the time, and sometimes the essays haven’t been as interesting as they should. But I only have missed one week.
When I tell friends that I write a weekly essay for an online publication, they find it hard to believe. Some ask if I wrote while I was in school and the answer is: “Only what I had to, and that was a real struggle.” I give a lot of credit to folks who write every day, and most times more than one piece.
I hope you enjoy reading Ramblings, and hopefully I will be able to continue for many years.
By the way, how long until I get a press badge for my hat?
