“Urinetown, the Musical,” a comedy that satirizes capitalism, social irresponsibility, and municipal politics, is the next production of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, Thursday, March 10, through Saturday, March 12, at the Robert Frost Auditorium.

A major success on Broadway, Urinetown, the Musical was the winner of three Tony awards (Best Director, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical) and was nominated in six other categories.

AVPA Artistic Director Sheila Silver blushes when discussing the new project for her Culver City High School drama students.

“As important a work as ‘The Laramie Project’ was for us last fall,” says Ms. Silver, “Urinetown could not be more irreverent. We are having so much fun finding every nuance and joke to entertain our audiences.”

Ms. Silver is collaborating with Dr. Tony Spano (Music Director), Mark McCleese (choreographer), and Joshua Hillinger (assistant director).

She is especially excited about the partnership with Center Theatre Group teaching artist Sarah Kranin who taught a set design class last fall and has mentored AVPA theatre students in creating the set that will be built.

“This is what AVPA is all about – integrating students from all departments to create this wonderful show,” Ms. Silver said.

Here is a synopsis of the play: In an attempt to regulate water consumption, Urinetown has outlawed the use of private toilets. The citizenry must use public, pay-per-use amenities owned and operated by Urine Good Company, a malevolent corporation run by the corrupt Caldwell B. Cladwell.

Urinetown will be staged three evenings at 7 o’clock, Thursday, March 10, Friday, March 11, and Saturday March 12 — plus a matinee performance at 1 on Saturday.
