Re “After Meeting Magee, Parents Resolved to ‘Fight, Claw, Attack’ for Silver’s Job”
If Sheila Silver, the fired Culver City High School drama and English teacher, has taught our children anything, she has taught them to speak and act with integrity.
Or, as Father Roger says in “The Laramie Project” — “Tell it right and tell it well.” I am the Theatre Representative to the AVPA Foundation. I feel compelled to comment on the stories regarding yesterday's student protests and parent meetings regarding the dismissal of Ms. Silver from CCHS and the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts.
We take issue with several of the quotes in your articles that misrepresent all concerned parents. We do not intend to “fight, claw, and attack” as your article about the parents’ meeting said. We can't imagine that anyone in attendance at yesterday's meeting would have said that. We do not blame this development on the School District's lack of support for “The Laramie Project.” During that production, the opposite appeared to be true.
However, we are stunned at Ms. Silver's dismissal from Culver City High School. It is inexplicable and heartbreaking. We are told that “it's not about her teaching and it's not about the kids.”
We know it's not.
Ms. Silver is most assuredly the most energetic, inspired, and passionate teacher that Culver City and the AVPA can offer our students. As we have repeatedly told these students, we will do everything within our power, respectfully and with integrity, to bring this conflict to a different conclusion. Jane Niles
