When planning concerts, I have always looked at different calendars to avoid as many spiritual/social conflicts as possible.

Out of respect for potential audience members, I don’t like to ask them to choose. I don’t want to put myself in competition with religious holidays… or events like the Academy Awards.

Try as I might, I don’t always catch everything.

This Sunday’s performance is a perfect example. I am scheduled to perform at 2 p.m. on a concert series in West Los Angeles. My competition? The Super Bowl.

It was too late when the concert organizers discovered the conflict. Due to our other commitments, if we didn’t stick to this date and time, we would not be able to perform on the series at all this season.

And so we carry on… except that I have not been able to let it go in my mind. I have spent ‘way more time and energy on contemplating possible outcomes (the most prevalent one being a room of empty seats with the exception of my loyal husband… who, thankfully for me, is not an avid football fan). Completely useless behavior…

On the Upside

Regardless of the sporting events of the day, I know this performance will be wonderful. I enjoy performing with pianist Kanae Matsumoto, my collaborative partner. And our program takes us dancing through numerous countries in spirit and in meter. Who can resist the tango, after all?

That is the important thing. And for those of you who are considering skipping the Super Bowl this year, please consider us as a low‐calorie alternative. You can learn more here: http://www.gatewayperformanceseries.org
