I wish I hadn’t had such a perfect introduction to my piece, Veritas, at my show on Saturday. This 4-minute rhapsody depicts the hopelessness, anguish and search for understanding that I experience when contemplating peoples’ harmful actions.

Last year I performed this piece right after my sister was mugged. This weekend I played it only hours after U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others in Tucson were shot.

What is this world we live in where people have lost respect for others? Why do so many feel the need to “get the best” of others? What happened to the Golden Rule?

I thank goodness for Giffords’ intern, Daniel Hernandez. And I give thanks to all those who shine in such tragic situations.

Everyday Heroes

Saturday’s events remind me of the value of common courtesy… and acts of kindness. While I may not be presented with the opportunity to save someone’s life in such a dramatic manner (for which I am grateful), each day presents new opportunities to shift global consciousness towards one of tolerance, acceptance, and respect for others.

Some of my favorite acts include:

• Letting mothers with small children and people with only a few items in front of me in line while shopping,

• Making eye contact and smiling at people during my walks,

• Giving space to drivers who are trying to switch lanes,

• Ask people I encounter while running errands or eating out how they are doing,

• Expressing my appreciation for everything others do for me (from opening doors to bagging groceries to directing me towards the shorter line at airport security).

I am by no means perfect. And I admit to sometimes being that driver who cuts in front. However, for the most part I remain mindful of the power I have to show love and tolerance towards strangers. And, I am convinced this DOES make a difference in the world.
