The day after the announcement of Freeport McMoRan’s acquisition of the former Plains Exploration & Production Co., which has been drilling the Baldwin Hills Oil Field for a decade, Rock Zierman, CEO of the California Independent Petroleum Assn., issued the following statement about anti-fracking bills that are in various stages in the state Legislature:
“Legislators are seeing through the rhetoric surrounding hydraulic fracturing.
“They are, instead, instead depending on science and reason, which is why they rejected all the moratorium bills.
“Now they are instead focusing on a comprehensive set of prudent regulations. By rejecting all the proposed moratorium bills, the Legislature demonstrated on a clear bipartisan basis that they are not interested in being held hostage to the voices of extremism on this topic.
“There is a huge body of scientific evidence, including studies done here in California,” said Mr. Zierman, “that have repeatedly demonstrated that hydraulic fracturing is safe and does not create the apocalyptic results the most vocal extremes routinely predict.”
