Regarding George Laase’s series this week, let’s not begrudge Culver City teachers and classified employees a 2 percent raise.
For gosh sakes, they haven't been given a raise for the last three years. If you calculate that the Consumer Price Index for inflation was 2.1 percent for 2012 ,you could easily argue that our teachers and classified are taking a salary cut.
To add insult to injury, the Consumer Price Index does not take into account the cost of gasoline or food increases. That would make the real inflation rate closer to 4 percent.
Our teachers' salaries are 10 percent below the mean of what other teachers are paid in the state.
We should want to give our teachers their fair share.
After all, many families move to Culver City because of our great school system. That has a lot to do with the quality of our teachers.
