Ostensibly, School Board President Kathy Paspalis’s bid for re-election six weeks from tomorrow was the marquee attraction.
The groaning dining room table bore enough food to serve Jacob Coxey’s starving army until Arbor Day.
Libations flowed like a rushing river snagged into one of those late-season Midwestern storms.
But what distinguished yesterday afternoon’s event from all others was that Laura Chardiet, born for the stage, was the hostess.
When you visit the cozy Culver West home of Ms. Chardiet, often twinned with her Board colleague Ms. Paspalis at Tuesday night meetings, you only have access to food or drink after performing the primary attraction.
When you come to Ms. Chardiet’s home, you sing for your supper.
No one demurs.
As the crowd collected in her step-down living room, the explained the uncomplicated ground rules.
“We are at my house,” Ms. Chardiet said. “When we are at my house, we get to sing a song,” whereupon she distributed the recently composed but unsigned lyrics.
And so Ms. Chardiet created the following ditty for the whole gang to warm up on:
Kathy Doodle Dandy (sung vigorously to the tune of you-know-what)
Her name is Kathy Paspalis
She is running for the Culver Board
She makes decisions that will put kids first
And she knows how to think with her gourd
Pushing for capital improvements, immersion and safety
Ms. Paspalis does her homework, she’s a real hard worker
