[Editor’s Note: With the immediate fate of the postponed bond measure very much in the air at Tuesday night’s School Board meeting, Board member Nancy Goldberg read a prepared statement affirming her decision announced on July 1, urging a delay in placing it on the next available ballot.]

Responsibility has a clear definition for me. First and foremost, responsibility requires methodical and careful examination of any costly, controversial issue before a decision is made. Any decisions that affect whole communities should be give judicious consideration.

When an entire community’s future tax obligations are being considered, I need to employ the slow and careful approach.

Decisions made in haste in my early life seldom turned our beneficially, so I determined that a bit more time evaluating the long term benefits and obligations of a bond would be logical.

Taking careful, well-thought out courses of action is a primary reason many of my constituents voted for me.

I do not oppose the bond. I thought a delay would allow us to clarify and to prioritize our essential needs. Our Sept. 3 workshop will further those goals. I intend to move forward to those ends.
We cannot have every new bell and whistle for our schools. We must be selective and prioritize our needs. That is my position. Support for a carefully and judiciously decided and prioritized program for capital improvements that secures the school environment for our children.
