[img]454|right|||no_popup[/img]Even as this is read near the dinner hour, Veronica Montes still is assembling a packet designed to answer students’ questions for the School District’s new Online Learning Academy that expects to take in its first students a week from tomorrow when classes resume for the entire District.
“We hope to have our first student then,” she said.
The bubbly second-year principal of Culver Park High School, a continuation school, barely had time to peer up from her desk to answer several questions.
“This is quite revolutionary,” Ms. Montes said this afternoon.
The concept of the Academy – that allows students access to instruction 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is available for all grades, all subjects, including foreign languages, accelerated programs, remediation programs and Advanced Placement courses – grew out of a conversation among Supt. Dave LaRose, Ms. Montes and others.
The first-year objective of the Online Learning Academy is to attract several dozen students.
And who is the target audience for Ms. Montes?
Carefully choosing her descriptive terms, she said:
“The student for whom an alternative delivery system would be beneficial. This could be the answer for someone struggling in the traditional setting.”
Culver Currents, the District publication, today judged that the academy “provides a pathway for students to learn in a flexible, adaptable and accessible new environment. The Academy blends home schooling, independent study and technology with site-based learning and support from credentialed CCUSD teachers. Parents also participate as learning coaches.”
