Dateline East Los Angeles – The harassed Sebastian Lopez family was traveling to a doctor’s appointment for their son in Hollywood yesterday when their 16-year-old car began to act strangely.

One of the car’s tires may have been sabotaged. It was sliced in two different areas.

Arrow-straight cut in tire – one of two slices – resembles a work of art.

“I cannot say for sure what happened,” Mr. Lopez told the newspaper this morning. “But when you look at the picture, there is a cut in the tire that forms an incredibly straight line.”

Driving at a slow rate, barely 5 miles an hour, the Lopez family’s left front tire caused an unexpected motion, followed by a loud noise and then rapidly deflated. The suddenly raggedy tire was unsalvageable.

Strongly tempted to brand the tire incident deliberate, Mr. Lopez said, “We were driving 5 miles an hour and there were no foreign objects in the street. So where did it come from?

“When we pulled into a Sunoco station, the gentleman there looked at me in a very curious way,” Mr. Lopez said. “He asked me, ‘What happened to your tire?’ I said ‘What do you mean?’ ‘Well, what happened?’ he said. But he wouldn’t engage me any further.”

The evidence is strong in favor of a deliberate attack.

“If it had been a rock, or something accidental, the lines would have been jagged not straight,” said Mr. Lopez, cautious in his judgment and reluctant to aim blame.

Immediately, dark suspicions – frequently called on during the two years the outspoken Lopezes have resided in the Wyvernwood garden apartments just east of downtown Los Angeles – were re-aroused.

Two nights ago, Mr. Lopez said that a person wielding a baseball bat smashed the windows of 29 cars in the complex’s parking lot.

Neither Mr. Lopez nor his wife Mirsha smokes. But on a number of occasions when they have gone to their car in the morning, a Nissan Altima that has racked up 248,000 miles, they have discovered cigarette butts strewn on the floor.

Who knew that ghosts were nicotine addicts?

Many of the Wyvernwood residents are Spanish-speaking immigrants who are engaging in long-running bitter war with corporate ownership over deteriorating conditions in individual units and a barrage of frightening, damaging, mystifying incidents.

“Am I absolutely sure of what happened?” asked Mr. Lopez. “No, but I am incredibly suspicious.
