Re “If LaRose Were in Interim Role, Would Search Be Plus or Minus?”

There is a uniqueness about Culver City, says School District Supt. Dave LaRose, that underscores next month’s formal search for a permanent principal.

“Obviously a search is very important in any system,” he said. “But when you are a one-high school system, it is different.”

“When all of your children will be going through one high school and be graduating to their future lives from one environment, you want to make sure that you are committed to that type of comprehensive process.

“We are that way upfront,” Mr. LaRose said.

The conversation centered on the viability of an internal candidate (in this case, Dr. Lisa Cooper, interim principal of Culver City High School, a presumed but not yet official contender) vs. an outsider.

“For any internal candidate, not  particular to this circumstance, it’s a double-edged sword in that it is an incredible benefit for the school and the individual because the person knows the system, knows the culture, knows the staff.

“So much of your time making the transition – and I have made enough of them in career – is really built on learning, listening and developing relationships and trusts so you can go about the work.

“As an internal candidate, you already have that established.”
