From almost anyone else, the abbreviated, single-syllable response would have been regarded as curt, borderline polite, possibly even offputting.
But when the attorney Steve Gourley is involved, a different set of metrics applies.
His almost invisible response screamed “typical, acceptable Steve Gourley,” of whom there may not have been anyone more colorful in City Hall history.
Gone four years from his most recent public office, the School Board, Mr. Gourley almost popped back into the news last week.
With the controversial matter of term limits for City Council members have arisen this winter, it was natural to consult Mr. Gourley.
He co-authored the Culver City term limits law two decades ago in the midst of his two four-year terms on the Council.
Is it time to revisit term limits? Mr. Gourley was asked.
He wasted neither time nor space in replying.
Forget the flora and fauna.
“No,” he said, declining to elaborate.
Once again Steve Gourley –need it be said known for his saltiness? – was being Steve Gourley.
Living life his way, the way he wants.
From 1988 to 1996, the lawyer who specializes in corporate securities and consumer financial lending, made City Council meetings entertaining and memorable.
He usually wears long-sleeved shirts for a reason. A surprise is lurking inside them.
Mr. Gourley shocked a number of people when he decided to run for the School Board in 2007. Nearly every meeting, especially when he presided, was a keeper.
You ain’t seen nothin’ yet, he may have thought.
He stunned and disappointed large numbers when he announced he would not seek a second term.
