In the late 1980s and early ‘90s, I transcribed lots of Glenn Esterly's interviews for TV Guide via my Veda's Magical Typing business.
Glenn (late editor of the Culver City News) and I were work comrades and friends, but not really close.
He was, as you say, very private.
I just decided to “search” today for him, and I found out he had died in 2008…alone…which I pretty much figured would happen.
A good lesson for me in perhaps being more intrusive with people, reminding them they don't need to be so alone.
