Re “A Fresh Green Carpet Being Prepared for Culver City”
As the long established Director of Public Works for Culver City, Charles Herbertson is closer to nature than most residents.
The urban forest he is envisioning will begin to take form once the first in a series of community workshops, Saturday, Jan 10, 10 a.m., in the Dan Patacchia Room, City Hall, gets under way.
The forest’s worth of trees that will be planted about the community “will provide an environment that is home to a lot of animals, including birds,” Mr. Herbertson said. “In some cases, though, there will be birds that are not that welcome, like crows.”
A driving reason for introducing the urban forest concept to Culver City is that “trees provide many environmental benefits such as cooling to prevent the heat-sync that you get in urban areas. Shade, of course, is another reason.”
For a slightly broader perspective, Mr. Herbertson observed that “virtually every type of tree brings a beneficial effect for nature. Every tree as a purpose. Trees produce oxygen. Nowadays, there is an emphasis on stormwater quality, and trees do a lot in that regard.”
