Dr. McKenna, who only took office last August in a special election, defeating a large field, will run unopposed.

The 74-year-old retired administrator is the only candidate to qualify for the ballot.

The special election was to complete the unexpired term of Marguerite LaMotte who died unexpectedly a year ago this week.

The term ends on June 30.

The new campaign is to earn a full four-year term through June 30, 2019.

“Securing voters signatures was an awesome grassroots effort,” Dr. McKenna said. “It is indicative of the support I have maintained for 50 years.

“Even though we are running unopposed, we are still committed to running an aggressive campaign to educate voters about what Dr. McKenna is doing and wants to do as their representative,” said a campaign spokesperson.

“From Cheviot Hills to Baldwin Hills, from Westmont to West Adams, from Hancock Park to Hyde Park, we are going to touch every part of the district with our message.”

Dr. McKenna said that “election season is a time of heightened awareness about policy issues. I want to take advantage of the public’s attention.

“I relish the opportunity to reach out to voters. We will discuss how we can work together to improve the education of our children and emancipate our community.”

District 1 spans Windsor Hills to the southwest, Cheviot Hills to the northwest, Hancock Park to the north, University Park to the northeast, and parts of Gardena to the southeast.
