Re “Celebrating Wounded Warriors with King and Mehaul at Joxer Daly’s”

The noted realtor Mike King and Vice Mayor Mehaul O’Leary are teaming up tomorrow evening in the final hours of 9-11 to host a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project at Mr. O’Leary’s Irish pub, Joxer Daly’s, 11168 Washington Blvd., near the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard.

The fundraiser is from 7 o’clock to 10.

The Dublin-born vice mayor/barkeep explained that every year since 2002, “I have done a fundraiser for the victims of 9-11.

“For the first few years, it was for Michael D’Agostino. He was a direct victim of a police officer who was killed in the collapse of the towers.

“We sent money to them for a few years, and we received a lovely letter from the family’s attorney. He said they no longer needed us to send funds, and we should find somebody else. The letter is framed at the pub,” Mr. O’Leary said.

“We searched then for someone who was not a victim of the attack but a victim of the victory. We found the family of Bobby Williamson who spent two months, 16 hours a day, at Ground Zero and found that he was diagnosed with multiple cancers, four or five cancers. He died a very horrible and lengthy death.

“We started sending money to his family,” Mr. O’Leary said. “The victims’ families are taken care of, but the volunteers’ families are not. Eventually, the Williamson family was taken care of.

“After the victims and their families were covered, and the victims of the cleanup, the next logical step was to go to the Wounded Warriors, the guys who had to go to war after 9-11.

“It has kind of evolved every year,” said the vice mayor.

Registration for tomorrow evening is a minimum $20 donation, which will cover the first drink and free food – chicken wings, burgers, quesadillas, chips and salsa.
The first 150 registrations will be sent an entry ticket to the event via email.
