Long-suffering residents of the Crenshaw District are about to see a transportation dream spring to life.

Construction for the Leimert Park underground station and an underground tunnel – in grave doubt for years — is expected to begin later this summer.

Long-term traffic reconfiguration will be implemented on Crenshaw Boulevard to support the construction of the station and tunnel, where two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction.

During the first phase, a construction work zone will be established on the west side of the street between 43rd Street and Vernon Avenue for approximately five weeks.

Officials are predicting a four-year project.

More detailed information regarding the construction of the Leimert Park station will be made available on the project website.  Construction activities for the Leimert Park Station and tunnel will cover the following:

Long-term lane reductions on Crenshaw between 43rd and 48th streets throughout construction.  Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained the majority of time.

An area on the east side of Crenshaw near 43rd Place will be the construction yard and staging area.

After the completion of the initial phases, most construction of the underground station and tunnel will be conducted below Crenshaw.

Interested parties are free to contact Metro Construction Relations for more information regarding this construction work activity.
