[img]1686|right|Laura Chardiet||no_popup[/img]The president of the School Board said this morning the state’s teacher tenure laws do not require tampering, although she is willing to hear out suggestions for tweaking.
Instead, she speaks glowingly of educational advances that are creatively being forged outside of classrooms.
Teacher tenure is a remote topic of scant importance in this community, she suggests.
A longtime LAUSD official by day, Laura Chardiet said the controversy — spurred by last week’s court ruling that such laws violated the California constitution – “deals with a tiny percent of teachers.
“I would hate to see us rewriting laws and making reforms for such a small portion of teachers.
“I really don’t think we need to do anything,” Ms. Chardiet said. “We don’t need to make sweeping changes.”
She suggested that the tidiest solution would be for teachers unions to clean up the messes created by ineffective instructors.
“It is in the best interests of unions to help facilitate moving teachers who are not called to be teachers, who are not effective in the classroom,” Ms. Chardiet said. “Unions could help facilitate those teachers to another career path. When you have teachers who are not highly effective, it reflects badly on the rest of the teachers who are highly effective.
“In Culver City we are doing a lot of work, creating professional learning communities, sharing best practices among colleagues.
“It is a beautiful seed that is being planted and nurtured in Culver City,” Ms. Chardiet said.
