Former School Board President Scott Zeidman and son Brandon.

The attorney/entrepreneur Scott Zeidman, who served one colorful newsmaking term on the School Board, was on the inside of Vergara v. California from its inception.

“I had been in contact with the attorneys’ office from the filing of the lawsuit,” Mr. Zeidman said this morning. “So I knew about it. But I did not have anything to do with the lawsuit. They had reached out to a lot of people. I never actually made contact with them, but I talked to their office. I was curious about what was going on. I happened to be on their email list.”

Mr. Zeidman said he was intensely curious about the major and minor developments in the two-month case.

“I imagine in any school district, 98 percent of the teachers are good,” Mr. Zeidman said. “Our teachers are great in Culver City. My kids are going to school in Culver City because they have great teachers.

Always Exceptions

“But there probably are one or two teachers, here or there, who shouldn’t be doing it, either shouldn’t be doing it any more or shouldn’t be doing it, period.”

Recalling a teacher from his undergrad days at Culver City High School, he told the following story:

“He would sit in the back of the room and tell us to read chapter one. The next day we would read chapter two. And the next day chapter three.

“He did not teach us anything. But he had been there 30 years. What do you do with him?

Mr. Zeidman said he never was going to have any involvement with the Vergara case that struck down teacher tenure as unconstitutional in California. But the judge placed a stay on the verdict, pending an appeal.

“I don’t know what the purpose was in contacting me,” Mr. Zeidman, father of two school-age sons, said. “I didn’t follow up, and they didn’t follow up. But because I got on their email list, I got their emails everyday about what was going on in their case.”
