Fellow Americans,
As we know, today is the 70th anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy — D-Day — the great crusade that essentially changed World War II and led to the overthrow of Nazism and to the liberation of Europe.
Attached is Gen. Eisenhower's speech to the soldiers, sailors and airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force before the Invasion, and his directive: “We will accept nothing less than full victory!” ….. ending with …. “And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”
Also attached is President Roosevelt's D-Day Prayer that he delivered over radio to the American citizenry, beginning with ….
“Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity,” and ending with … Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace – a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil. Thy will be done, Almighty God, Amen.”
As we celebrate the rewards of this full victory and honor and thank those who delivered it, let us also give praise and thanks to Almighty God Who answered our nation's prayer.
