I have found that when I talk about hypnosis, people listen.
You may be a little like me. When we go to a party or meet someone new, it does not take long to find out what a new acquaintance does for a living.
The response to me never varies.
“You are kidding, right?”
“You really are a hypnotist? Will you make me cluck like a chicken or quack like a duck?”
To which I answer, “If you are willing to quack or cluck when awake, yes. I can ask if you would quack or cluck for me while under hypnosis.”
When someone comes to me and is hypnotized, many say they were surprised they were so alert. They heard and they remembered everything.
Yes, that is the way it works.
An experiment was conducted on two volunteers 138 years ago, in 1876. One was to enter a room, go to bed and sleep. The other was hypnotized in a separate room.
An interesting discovery was made. A volunteer went into the sleeping man’s room and read him one paragraph from a book. He went into the hypnotized person’s room, read the same paragraph.
When the sleeper and the hypnotized person were restored to their regular state, the sleeper was not aware that anyone had even entered his room. The hypnosis volunteer quoted what had been read, virtually word for word.
So it was discovered that while both appeared in a relaxed sleep, only the hypnotized person was keenly aware of everything around him.
The hypnotized volunteer said his senses were far more acute than when he was in a normal waking state.
A friend came to me after an ongoing battle. She hoped hypnosis would be helpful, and it was. She was not sure if she could be hypnotized.
I asked her to think of multiplication tables, poetry or songs she knew.
The Way It Works
She was to recite any or all while being hypnotized. I was performing an arm raising, asking the subconscious to raise her arm so that her hand connected to her face.
As the arm began to rise she laughed. She candidly admitted that even though she was doing what I had asked, her arm still came up. I explained she was thinking with her conscious mind while I was talking to her subconscious.
It is clear to me when the hypnosis is taking effect. I look for a subconscious reaction. When the subconscious is responding to my suggestions, I would make suggestions to assist the client to gain the changes they want.
A remarkable tool, hypnosis will assist anyone to gain desired changes.
Don’t be intimidated by stage hypnosis or the apparent control the hypnotist has over audience members on stage. All are there to have fun. It concerns me that audience members leave with the false impression a hypnotist takes over a person’s mind and is in control of him or her.
A hypnotist never can take control of a person’s mind. If you do not want to be hypnotized, you will not be.
If you are willing to be hypnotized, then and only then can you be.
You will not do anything under hypnosis you would not do when awake.
I tell my clients, however, that if they quickly follow my suggestions, without thinking about them too much, they will enjoy a pleasant, beneficial experience that will help them make the changes they desire.
