Re “King’s Second Run for Council Should Be Less Complicated”
[img]2333|right|Christopher Patrick King||no_popup[/img]It is a measure of Christopher Patrick King’s maturity as a blossoming civic leader that after finishing third in last week’s City Council election, he said his greatest disappointment was communal rather than personal.
“The very low voter turnout was No. 1,” he said. “I was hoping that, being a young, kind of upstart, candidate, that we could spur more interest in the race.
“Being that it was an off-year, off-cycle election, I was disappointed more Culver City voters did not come out. I really feel we can be the most efficacious and have the most power in our government at the local level.
“I would like to have seen a better turnout. I was disappointed there was such apathy.”
Why are voters so passive, the brainy 31-year-old business owner, known as CPK, was asked?
“Oh, gosh,” he said, exhaling.
Don’t take that as a response.
Mr. King began plotting the late election three years ago, probing deep backgrounds.
Having lived the most recent one-third of his life here, he wanted to know more about the history, the dynamics of the community, what the issues and rhythms of Culver have been over the years, and how it has arrived at the present.
With the aid of a partner, Mr. King authored a deeply reasoned and lengthy paper that probably did not receive as much attention and consumption as deserved.
He and his campaign team mapped tactics and strategy that he hopes will be rewarded in two more years when three seats will open up on the City Council.
The long-running lower voter turnout, says Mr. King, “is something I am interested in looking into,”
That means its causes and potential solutions will be doggedly pursued, carefully examined and will be ready for inspection by the start of the next election cycle in 19 months.
