[Editor’s Note: We are indebted to the community activist Rebecca Rona-Tuttle for informing us this afternoon that former School Board candidate Claudia Vizcarra introduced a petition earlier today. The text is reproduced below.]

We respectfully ask the Culver City Unified School District School Board to pass a policy to make the new print (and the online version) of Culver Currents into bilingual publications. We need 50 signatures, and there are currently seven.

Providing the Spanish-speaking public with materials written in Spanish is a critical step to helping them gain awareness of School District events and issues. It also shows our District's respect for them and their importance to our School District and city. And if our materials are in both languages, family members can assist each other to understand the content, and some will improve their English. What could be better?

While we thank you for putting Culver Currents in print and delivering it to our homes, we believe that in a District with a significant population of English learners and a strong Spanish immersion program, it is not too much to ask to meet the requirements of the new Local Control Funding Formula to fully engage the parents of high need students by making Culver Currents a bilingual publication.

After Ms. Vizcarra, the early petition signers include Maria Ferreiros, Rose Parekh, Dennis Treleven, Barbara Honig, Amanda Mayeda and Ms. Rona-Tuttle.
