The Los Angeles Times did not post the Sheriff Lee Baca “retirement” story until 11 o’clock last night – after a Times reporter received the same tipoff as we did from a member of the County Board of Supervisors, and KABC-7 did, too.

Times Publisher Eddy Hartenstein had planned on sitting on this bombshell story until Mr. Baca’s official resignation announcement this morning as a courtesy to the chief.

But the KABC News team forced the Times’s hand by running away with the story while Mr. Baca was about to throw in the towel.

This immediately forced the Times to play yet another embarrassing game of catch-up with KABC News.
