As President-elect Trump puts his staff together, he is breaking promises made during the long campaign.

I am a firm believer that a political campaign should not last more than a month. In the old days, when candidates had to travel by train to get their message and lies to the people, a longer campaign period was necessary. Today we have television and computers, that can accomplish the same task in one hour or less.

My opinion: Each candidate would purchase one hour of television time to get his/her message to the people. That hour would be followed by a town hall meeting, where individuals could ask the candidates questions, with a non-reporter moderator, to keep things moving. After the primary, each candidate would again purchase one hour of television time to outline his or her position — possibly monthly. Each of these events would be followed by a televised town hall.

Political signs and any travel that a candidate still thought was necessary, would be limited to the month before the election.

Candidates spend too much money telling us lies, half-truths and how bad the other candidate is. That money could be spent on feeding the hungry of the world. That might be another good idea, for every dollar a candidate spends, a dollar must be donate to a charity.

Starting Out Right

On Thanksgiving, no matter what we thought of the outcome of the election, we still have a lot to be thankful for. We live in a great country, even with its faults.

Pauline and I started Thanksgiving Day out by attending church. After church we each got a doughnut and then it was back to the house to cook for our family plus one. Our grandson brought his girlfriend with him. Pauline peeled the potatoes. I got the ham and the turkey roll into the oven.

Most of the kids brought something, so there was plenty of food. I felt the ham might have been overcooked, as we took time out during the cooking cycle to show Darlene’s family the condo they are getting. The condo did receive good reviews. For some reason the turkey roll took forever to get to the right temperature. I announced it as the second course.

Music to My Ears

Did you by chance see, or hear Aretha Franklin sing the National Anthem before the Detroit game on Thanksgiving? Since everyone was at our house, the game was on the television. What she did to the anthem was a disgrace. Sure I’ve heard different renditions. Her version was long and distracting.

The Anthem should be about the flag and our country, not the person performing it.
