Re: “Parcel B Gets Part of CW Parcel Tax”

Perhaps the most intriguing outcome of last week’s election, from a Culver City perspective, was the resounding defeat of Measure CA.

It was the only one among four Culver City measures to lose, 3 to 1.

There were so many measures and props that CA—transferring supervision of the police chief and the fire chief – easily could have been buried under a tidal wave of verbal confetti about anything else, everything else.

Instead, CA was heavily targeted by activists.

So far, quite accurate.

The raison d’être for standing against transferring from the City Council to the city manager – to conform with the City Charter – confounded observers.

Why it was targeted remains an enigma wrapped in a mystery.

In a community of spirited activism, how many people know – how many people care – whether the Council or City Manager John Nachbar holds hiring and firing over Scott Bixby and Dave White?

How many people know which is which?

Never mind that Mr. Bixby, chief of cops, and Mr. White, chief of firemen, are twin pillars of their communities. As firm as the Wall of China, they are as controversial as the true color of the sky.

Says Mayor Jim Clarke: “I keep hearing it has to do with police accountability and the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Their theory seemed to be that because of the police incidents around the country, the City Council needs to be involved in the supervision.”

The funny part: “Never heard any discussion about the first chief,” said the mayor.
