Re “Why Was Critical Column Yanked?”

Brothers and Sisters,

It has been 39 hours since Larry Aubry’s op-ed was taken down from the L.A. Sentinel’s website, and it has not returned.

Right in the place where Mr. Aubry’s op-ed previously appeared on the front page is a glowing endorsement from the L.A. Sentinel Executive Editor, Danny Bakewell Jr. for Measure M.

In the Sentinel endorsement, was there any reference to a single project in South L.A. or any black community in MTA’s plan for the next 50 years? No. Because there isn’t one.

Was there any reference to the fact that MTA rejected a request that a small percentage of the Measure M resources be directed to anti-displacement tools to prevent gentrification? No.

Was there any reference to the permanent nature of the regressive sales tax increase? No. It is a forever tax, with no sunset date, meaning that this MTA board and the next MTA boards for forever will be given a blank check to do whatever they want.

Was there any reference to the fact that the northern extension of the Crenshaw Line through West Hollywood and Mid-Wilshire, will be 100 percent underground, and how that is textbook environmental racism since the line is at street-level in the ‘hood? No.

But you know what there was — reference to the jobs that black people never get.

Apparently we are not supposed to believe our lying eyes.

MTA defines “success” as 15 percent black employment on the Crenshaw Line. 15 percent for a project that goes through a community that is 68 percent black. I guess because their black hire rates are so abysmal on other projects (averaging 1-3 percent), we’re supposed to be okay with the fact that 85 percent of the people building the Crenshaw Line through a black community aren’t black.

Of course they cited MTA’s debunked claim of “reducing traffic by 15 percent” (Measure M Claim to Reduce Traffic Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story: http://www.scpr.org/news/2016/10/28/65831/measure-m-claim-to-reduce-traffic-doesn-t-tell-the)

I say this about Danny Bakewell’s Sentinel…they never surprise me. Are you surprised?

Just another day in Chinatown…I mean South L.A.
