Mr. Herbertson, on north side

Second in a series.

Re: “Is City Hall Changing Directions?”

To those denizens of Culver City seeking direction for their lives, the astute Public Works director brings news:

The east-facing side of the City Hall building, the giant wall that stares at the Meralta Building, is, to state the non-obvious, the northern side of City Hall, according to the Pubic Works director.

Since a mid-summer season heat wave is sprinkling drops of perspiration throughout Culver City, it is time to revisit the Public Works director, who, in his job, is accustomed to taking heat.
In addition to being an astute executive, Mr. Herbertson is cerebral.

Don’t take my word that the Lafayette Place-facing side of City Hall (that points east) is the north side, says Mr. Herbertson.

“Next time you are at City Hall,” he said, “take a compass and you will see it faces north.”
One red face later, Mr. Herbertson’s assertion was verified.

Continuing to navigate – and hopefully surround – City Hall, Mr. H deepened the gathering mystery.

“What you think is north is west,” he said.

With both Christopher Columbus and Cecil B. de Mille being too dead to care about direction, Mr. Herbertson continued.

“If you look down Duquesne (which used to run north and south) or Hughes (the by-now allegedly ‘northerly’ extension of Duquesne),” he said, “you almost are looking due west.”

Following Mr. Herbertson’s dorections…
