Culver City High School sports fans experienced mixed emotions last weekend.

The Centaurs baseball team (21-8) ended its season by losing to Redondo Union while Centaur sprint star Cahlil Hooper qualified for Friday’s state track and field meet in the 200 meters.

Competing against some of America’s fastest 200 meter runners in the CIF Masters meet, Hooper placed fifth out of nine runners following a slow start.

With the top six advancing, Hooper is on his way to the CIF finals in Clovis. .

After facing the best 580 schools, Hooper will run against the state’s premier runners.

In baseball, Culver High lost to the No. 1-ranked team.

The game was billed as a matchup between the top pitchers in the South Bay, Nolan Martinez of Culver City and Sean Reynolds of Redondo.

Unfortunately Redondo was able to score nine runs in one inning off of Martinez and another Centaur pitcher.

The Centaurs, undefeated in winning the Ocean League at 10-0, fell two games short of the CIF Division 3 finals.

They won their first two playoffs games. Redondo’s record is 29-2, meaning the Centaurs played one of the best teams in Southern California.
