How to Win, How to Lose

Chief Bixby, right, and Capt. Allen Azeran

He is a veteran of 25 months as Culver City’s Top Cop.

However, if unassuming Scott Bixby is the chief of the Police Dept. for 25 more years, he is unlikely to craft a more perfect moment than the sterling performance he delivered last Monday afternoon.

Video of it should be required watching and scoring for prospective recruits.

When stern-faced, ideologically oriented City Councilperson Meghan Sahli-Wells scorned him and his officers for failing to live up to her standards for diversity, Chief Bixby deftly refused to blink.

He countered her emotion with well-practiced self-control, common among the best cops.

Admirably disciplined, he refused to permit himself to be baited by his relentless interrogator.

She kept trying to take him down.

Never raised his voice.

Never came within five miles of losing his reliably invisible temper.

Whether he hires purple, green, checkerboard or headless transgenders, Chief Bixby deserves instant applause at his next public appearance for heroism under fire.

Chief Bixby is a shining star student of his law enforcement training.

She reiterated her oft-spoken political convictions.

Judging by her questions, she had not bothered to verify whether the Police Dept. was complying with her politically assigned standards.

He was prepared for, steeled against, the sadly misplaced, wildly inaccurate assertions she elevated to the level of biblical truths.

She was not.

And that is how winners and losers traditionally are distinguished.
