The nearly unanimous silence by her colleagues the last two days was almost as fascinating as City Councilperson Meghan Sahli-Wells’s harsh rap against the Police Dept. – to their multi-colored faces – for being too white.
Although Ms. Sahli-Wells had not researched the comparable data between the city demographics and the department, that did not slow her attack on the Police Dept. for not being as diverse as she has determined it should be.
The department has a smaller percentage of white guys than the city.
Ms. Sahli-Wells did not opine on what should be done with the extra white males who reside in Culver City.
Deport them to the Isle of Lesbos?
Only Vice Mayor Jeff Cooper challenged her harshly delivered remarks.
Gentle Jeff is the lightest hearted, most funloving of the Council members.
Why did “my colleague” bring up race and ethnicity, Mr. Cooper wondered, “when we already have a pretty diverse Police Dept.”
The majority of Culver City residents “don’t care whether the officers who answer their calls are black or white or brown or yellow, male or female,” he said. So why bring it up?
Afterward, freshman member Göran Eriksson said Mr. Cooper’s succinct remarks were sufficient.
It was no surprise that new Mayor Jim Clarke, a wily veteran of Washington and state politics, is not pugilistically inclined, one reason he is popular and transparent, a rare matched set.
