Re: “Cooper Rejects Meghan’s Diversity Charge”

Regarding City Council colleague Meghan Sahli-Wells’s charge that an invisible barrier was blocking non-white candidates from the dais, Jeff Cooper said that he never has been confronted by bigotry during the 30 years his family has lived here.

“Of course,” he replied with his well-known smile, “I am a white man” and a Jew.

“I must tell you that friends have told me they have met with bias here in Los Angeles.”

What would Mr. Cooper say to Ms. Sahli-Wells about her assertion?

“I would tell her she should be more concerned about getting people who can best serve our city, who care about our city, who can represent everyone rather than worrying so much about the color of a person, the sex of a person.

“It should just be about a person who cares about our city.”
