Mr. Clarke, left, with Mr. Wyant

Second in a series.

Re: “Wyant Opener Attracts Right Formula Crowd”

Since the Sunday afternoon occasion was to send Scott Wyant’s nascent City Council campaign airborne, and since Mr. Wyant is a Planning Commissioner, his friend City Councilman Jim Clarke was talking about the planning issue of the day, mansionization.

“One-size-fits-all is not the answer” to the present controversy centered in Carlson Park, Mr. Clarke said, who suspects he may have a panacea.

“I would like to create incentives for people to build out the first floor of their homes. The problems develop when people are building up (instead of out). Neighbors complain because the height blocks from shade or has windows that look into people’s backyard.

“That would be less of a problem,” Mr. Clarke theorizes, “if we can incentivize development on the first floor. “If there is going to be development on the second floor, have a certain amount of setbacks so a neighbor isn’t faced with a 30-foot wall outside of his bedroom window.”

Mr. Ubiquity, known for his daily-nightly attendance at city/community meetings, is a constant in the audience, for example, at Planning Commission meetings.

“The reason is, the Commission really gets into such detail on these kinds of (complicated) subjects,” said the second-term Councilman. “It helps to educate me about what the various issues are when they come before us on the City Council.

“The five commissioners are very detailed and serious about their work.”

Always courteous, the afternoon hour on Lindblade Avenue was growing late, and Mr. Clarke was hurrying toward his car for his next appearance. “I am going to the Culver City Chamber Orchestra’s first concert of the season at the Vets Aiditorium. I support our Chamber orchestra. I support the Symphony orchestra. Great cultural arts activities are going on in this community.”
