Culver City High School’s female Athlete of the Year, Taylor Selfride, turned out to be one of the best girl volleyball players in school history.

During her three-year varsity career Selfridge led the Centaurs to some of the highest levels in their CIF divisions.

“Taylor was a big reason we were able to win back-to-back Ocean League titles the past two years,” said Coach Joe Manzo.  “She has a passion for the sport as well as a heart of gold.

“Not only is she a great athlete but she was a wonderful teammate and student. She gave her heart to the Culver City girls volleyball program.”

Selfride knew she was in the running for the prestigious award. She also realized several others enjoyed good seasons in their sports.  “Lots of girls could have won,” she said. “I was surprised they chose me.

“I really enjoyed playing for Culver City and coach Manzo.

“We were a family. We learned how to make mistakes and get through it.  We learned how to win and to lose with pride and dignity.”

Manzo will miss his all-CIF player, team captain and Ocean League Player of the Year.

Time has arrived for her to move on.

“To watch her grow as a person and as a volleyball player was a joy,” said Manzo.  “She will be missed.

“All I can wonder is, who will be the next Taylor for Culver City?

“I know she will accomplish great things at the next level.”
