Re “Apartment Hunting Adventure

Dateline Boston — So apartment No. 1 didn’t work. On to No. 2. There’s a wonderful neighborhood list that I’m on where people post town meetings, lost (and found) cats, apartments for rent, etc. I posted what we were looking for, and immediately got responses.

Turned out that Philip, a guy I know from around the corner, has an uncle who owns an apartment. A three- bedroom, available when we wanted it. It sounded really good, but so had the first place, so I wasn’t holding my breath.

We met with Philip on a Tuesday and went to see the apartment. It was a few blocks away from where I live now, equidistant to two good friends of ours. It was on a beautiful street, in a brick building. We walked into the unoccupied apartment and saw right away that it was big. There was a living room with a fireplace (non-working but that’s what pillar candles are for!), and off of that, a dining room. There was a kitchen off of the dining room, with a full bathroom next to it. The kitchen had tons of storage, a black granite countertop, and a new oven. We went out the back door off the kitchen and saw a small porch, then down to the basement to see the coin-operated washer and dryer.

So Much Spaaaaace

Back upstairs, we went from the kitchen to an alcove. It had two closets and a built-in hutch/bookcase. From there we saw another closet and another full bathroom with a tub. Next to the bathroom was the first bedroom. Next to that, the second bedroom, and next to that, the third bedroom. Not a dining room made into a bedroom, or an office space that could be used as a bedroom; these were real bedrooms, each with its own closet. Are you keeping track of how much storage space was in this place?

I wanted it. I could imagine myself living there. Philip went into the next room and told us to take our time talking. We both liked it a lot; we just had to talk about budget. We went home, talked, and sketched out our budget. We also sketched out how we could turn the dining room into our office, and eat in the alcove off of the kitchen. We’d have to tighten our belts. I’d cut back on tattoos. S.O. was excited, too, but he wanted to see other places. He called it his “due diligence.” I didn’t want anyone else to make an offer on the apartment, so I asked if he could make appointments to see other places during the week. We’d make our decision on Friday.

Next week:
We visit apartments 3 and 4. Will either of them surpass the awesomeness of apartment 2?
