A Nudge to Council: Enforce the Signage Around Busy Schools

Members of the City Council:

As you consider the Culver City Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan at Monday night’s meeting, keep in mind that the Police Dept. does not have the resources to enforce posted traffic regulations, like stop signs and no U-turns, around the Farragut Drive/Elenda CCUSD Complex that is home to Culver City High School, Culver City Middle School, Farragut Elementary School, Child Development Center and the Culver City Adult School. This complex has a population around 4,000 students and supporting staff. It is surrounded by residential neighborhoods, which seems to me, is deserving of some priority.

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan will count on enforcement to keep people safe as they utilize healthier means of getting around our beautiful city. Please keep in mind that we do not currently have those resources. I say this because on last Monday afternoon there was a CCPD motor officer pulling over vehicles making U-turns and ignoring the stop sign at Farragut Drive and Elenda. CCPD has informed me that officers will be available in the area as calls and time permit. Please follow the URLs to what I see most school day afternoons at dismissal time:

I am just a parent and grandparent. I wonder if human resources is an issue if vast numbers of students cross Elenda at Franklin because that is where the CCHS school gate is, there isn't a stop sign and crosswalk there to make it appear safer? I wonder why the Overland Avenue Adult School Campus cannot be used as a dropoff/pickup area to reduce some of the traffic on Farragut Drive?

Respectfully Yours,
