With the City Council’s declared intention to bring suit if agreement is not reached serving as an uninvited guest in the crowded room, a barrel full of delegates from West Los Angeles College and City Hall huddled for more than 3 ½ hours this afternoon, presumably aiming for a compromise.

One, however, was not reached.

Does this mean Culver City’s next move will be to sue the college in an attempt to forestall construction plans until they make an agreement?

At the dinner hour tonight, no one was saying.

By law, Friday represents the deadline for filing a lawsuit 30 days after the environmental impact report for the college’s expansion project was certified.

No further meetings are scheduled. Often, this is a signal for attorneys to swing through the trees and prepare an injunction demand.

Official word, though, will have to wait for another day.

“We are sworn to secrecy,” said Charles Herbertson, one of the city’s key negotiators in his role as the Director of Public Works.

As expected, each of the three Culver City college-adjacent homeowner groups sent representatives to the table — in the third-floor Patio Room at City Hall — and they participated with vigor.
