This essay about the School Board and its attitude is directed toward Teachers Union President David Mielke and a certain member of the School Board who shall remain anonymous for a few more minutes.
The most knowledgeable, most involved mom in the School District leaped on Friday afternoon’s Who Will Be the Next Superintendent? story 10 minutes after it went to print here.
“I will quote your final sentence,” she writes:
“‘Meanwhile, one-third of the way through June, School Board sources said there is no urgency to complete a temporary appointment.’
“That sentence says it all. Dr. Cote is leaving July 1, you know.
“There is no hurry because some members of the Board feel they can run the District themselves.
“This is called micro-managing, and it is one of the reasons the Superintendent is leaving.
“The Board should know that the Daily Breeze reported last week that Hawthorne just named their new Superintendent from within. They saved themselves $40,000 by not hiring a superintendent-headhunter.
“I hope our District is listening. Forty thousand dollars saved.”
Who could logically disagree with the letter-writer?
When administrators are taking $20,000 paycuts while being asked to perform the identical duties, how can the School Board conscientiously spend one dollar for a search when qualified persons are presently working in the District?
Once a temp Super is named, why does the Board have to blow $40,000 on an agency that some people in the District say has turned this “search” scheme into an incestuous broad-daylight racket?
Can’t the District itself advertise?
Had they invested that blown $40,000 last time on the last Super’s salary, Board members would not be standing there this morning with their empty palms facing the sky.
