It has been more than a year since City Hall started the Culver City Bicycle and Pedestrian Initiative, with the goal of creating a Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan to encourage and improve walking and biking in the community.

The plan has the potential to create safer and more accessible bicycle and pedestrian facilities and policies, which will lead to positive benefits for mobility, public health and the environment.

The plan is on the Culver City Walk Bike website (www.ccwalkbike.org), and the Full Draft will be discussed at the final community meeting on Saturday, June 12, from 10 to 1, in the Garden Room of the Vets Auditorium, 4117 Overland Ave.

This meeting is a major opportunity to learn and provide feedback on the entire plan, which includes policies and maps. Past workshops, held in April 2009, July 2009, October 2009, and January 2010, have all been part of an iterative process that will culminate on June 12.

To help create the plan, the city appointed a Public Advisory Committee. Over the last year, not only have there been public meetings, but the Public Advisory Committee has outreached at major Culver City events (Fiesta La Ballona, Summer Concert series, the Farmers Markets) and presented at various community organizations, school groups and neighborhood associations. In addition, information has been displayed at the Julian Dixon Library, inside Culver City busses, and on the Ballona Creek Path. Recently, the Committee and the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition hosted a well-attended Historical Walk in partnership with the Culver City Historical Society and a Family Bike Ride. These events totaled over 110 participants.

All of these outreach activities were conducted as a means of incorporating community input: the key component to a strong Master Plan that is intended to propel Culver City to become a place that offers active, sustainable and safe lifestyles, where people bike and walk for transportation and recreation.

The Culver City Bicycle and Pedestrian Initiative is a part of the PLACE Grant, a collaboration of the city of Culver City, Alta Planning and Design and the L.A. County Bicycle Coalition. See: www.ccwalkbike.org. Also: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/place/.
