Finally, a Little Attention for Culver City’s New Mayor

This is the eighth afternoon of Christopher Armenta’s one-year term as Mayor.

But, shhh. Don’t let it get out.

Hardly anyone in Culver City knows the smilingest, most-accessible City Councilman in history was elected last week except for his wife, his son and three birds who hang out in the backyard of the Armentas’ east Culver City home.

A week ago last night when he was undramatically elected by his Council colleagues, the ceremony surrounding the departure of Mr. Armenta’s friend, City Councilman Gary Silbiger, overshadowed every breath that was exhaled.

Last night, instead of leading the Council meeting as the Mayor usually does, he was obligated to give ‘way to Vice Mayor Mehaul O’Leary who doubles as Chair of the Redevelopment Agency.

The meeting was dubbed a Redevelopment Agency evening, and so Mr. O’Leary sat in the leader’s chair. Neither bashful nor loquacious, Mr. Armenta spaced his succinct comments widely.

Tonight at the Julian Dixon Library, 4975 Overland Ave., the patient Mr. Armenta finally will bask in a spotlight.

Maybe.

He will be surrounded by children, so maybe not.

At 7 o’clock, after a week in the obscure shadows, Mr. Armenta will read bedtime stories to children from eight days to eight years old, a program sponsored by the Culver City Friends of the Library.

Wanda Anesh, President of Friends of the Library (ccfriendspres@gmail.com), says the Mayor’s readings will be Mother’s Day-themed, and that the evening is planned for the entire family.

Ms. Anesh says that immediately following the Mayor’s stories a related craft project will be offered.
